Plain definitions of the terms behind brand protection: serialisation, GS1 Digital Link, clone detection, grey-market diversion and more.
All terms
- Serialisation
- Giving every individual unit of a product its own unique identifier, rather than one code per product line or batch.
- GS1 Digital Link
- A GS1 standard that encodes product identifiers such as the GTIN, batch and serial number into a web address inside a QR code or DataMatrix.
- Clone detection
- Spotting copies of a genuine code by finding the same unique serial scanned in places or times that cannot both be genuine.
- Grey-market diversion
- Genuine products sold outside the region or channel they were intended for, usually to exploit price differences.
- Product authentication
- Checking whether a physical item is genuine, using features or codes that counterfeiters cannot reproduce or reuse.
- Signed serial
- A serial number that carries a cryptographic tag computed from a secret key, so only the key holder can create valid serials.
