Serialisation, explained

Serialisation: Giving every individual unit of a product its own unique identifier, rather than one code per product line or batch.

A barcode on a typical retail product identifies the product type: every bottle of the same shampoo carries the same code. Serialisation adds a serial number that is different on every single unit, so each pack can be told apart from every other.

Unit-level identity is the foundation for traceability, recalls, warranty checks and counterfeit detection, because a system can record what happened to each individual unit instead of a whole batch.

How Satyakod handles it

Satyakod issues a 16-character serial for every unit and adds a cryptographic tag to it, so a made-up serial fails verification.
